Predictive maintenance for industrial fans and filters

Condition measurements make it possible to identify trends before a failure interrupts the process. The value of predictive maintenance lies in relating vibration, temperature and pressure signals to actual operating conditions.

The process and emission sources

A predictive strategy begins by identifying relevant failure modes. In fans, deposits, wear, misalignment, attachment problems and bearing degradation require different signals and analyses. In the filter, cleaning, sealing, discharge and filter medium condition have their own relationships with temperature and pressure.

Instrumenting every point without defining how the data will be used may generate a volume of information without improving availability. A baseline, measurement conditions and a person responsible for interpreting trends and initiating maintenance actions must be established.

Characteristics that guide engineering

A single reading does not always reveal the cause. Increased vibration may result from deposits, wear, misalignment or another mechanism; increased differential pressure may be linked to dust loading, cleaning or condensation.

Solution configuration and sizing

Readings must be comparable: speed, production load, damper positions and filter condition influence results. For vibration, analysis must consider measurement position and direction, assembly characteristics and signal evolution. An overall value alone does not identify the source of the problem.

In the collector, differential pressure must be related to airflow and cleaning behavior. Compressed-air temperature and quality may explain a loss of performance that would otherwise appear to be bag loading alone. Indications of retention failure require appropriate means of verification, distinct from merely monitoring filter resistance.

  • Establish a baseline after commissioning.
  • Repeat measurements under comparable conditions.
  • Investigate trends.
  • Record interventions and effects. Interpretation must guide concrete inspection and maintenance actions.

Performance, diagnostics and maintenance

A useful program turns a trend into a targeted inspection. If a signal increases after a product change, for example, investigation may prioritize deposits and load changes. After intervention, a new reading must show whether the hypothesis was confirmed, preserving the event history.

Benefits must be measured through avoided failures, downtime and maintenance predictability, without treating every alarm as proof of imminent failure. The monitoring system supports diagnosis; it does not replace inspection, technical assessment or manufacturer-specific criteria.

Turning data into decisions

Instrumentation is more useful when responsibilities, frequency and action criteria are defined. Indicators must support inspection, cleaning or shutdown decisions, with a record of the result obtained after each intervention.
