Inca Incineração

Integrated gas treatment for thermal destruction of hazardous waste

Kleema developed a gas treatment system for a rotary kiln used for thermal destruction of Class I waste. The project integrated post-combustion, cooling, chemical reaction, and filtration, considering gas aggressiveness and the variety of processed materials.

The challenge

The variety of waste received by the facility produces gases with different compositions and contaminant concentrations. The challenge was to size a system capable of handling these variations, protecting equipment, and meeting the emission limits set for the operation by environmental authorities.

The solution

The configuration developed by Kleema combines four complementary stages:

Post-combustion chamber

With the assistance of a burner, it provides conditions to complete combustion of gases from the rotary kiln, promoting oxidation of carbon monoxide and remaining organic compounds. This stage contributes to process safety and control.

Water spray cooler — quencher

Reduces gas temperature to a range compatible with subsequent treatment stages, protecting equipment and filter elements. Cooling prepares the gas stream for reagent application and contaminant collection in the following stages.

Reaction tower

Brings gases into contact with lime-based reagents and activated carbon. Lime neutralizes acidic components, including those associated with chlorine and fluorine, while activated carbon adsorbs dioxins, furans, and certain heavy metal species.

Bag filter

Retains particulate matter, reagents, and solid treatment residues, including contaminants associated with these particles. After filtration, treated gases are discharged through the stack.

Integration for a variable process

Joint sizing of these stages aligns temperature, reaction conditions, and solids retention. The solution was designed for Inca's process characteristics, combining emission treatment, equipment protection, and operational reliability.

The results

The system passed emission tests and was approved by the competent authority, demonstrating compliance with the environmental requirements assessed.

Currently in operation, the solution forms part of Inca Incineração's Class I waste thermal destruction process, combining post-combustion, cooling, chemical reaction, and filtration to treat gases generated in the rotary kiln.
